Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level extension is the single TLD planned for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level domains remained active.
